Merbabu SkyRace ultimately the scale of the challenge and the great beauty of the mountain Merbabu 3145m landscapes. Courses take in the most dramatic, technical and scenic trails through a mountainous area, Merbabu SkyRace explore the Merbabu National Park in Central Java Indonesia, a stunning natural reserve known for its diverse ecosystems and biodiversity featuring rugged terrain, deep gorges, and beautiful savanna, home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species.

Race Rules

QUALIFICATIONS

Age, Any male or female 18 years of age or older as of the race day, who is in good health and can complete the race without getting lost.

For youths below 18 years old, parental/ guardian permission is required.

Organizers reserve exclusive rights to approve/deny registration, including the right to award dispensation (with careful consideration) for those that do not meet the qualification criteria.

Experience, Requires the completion running road/ trail races between two years maximum before the race event Merapi Merbabu de Trail for category 20k and 10k as follows:

40K/50K – completion a road/trail race with minimum of 21k

20K – completion a road/trail race with minimum of 10k

10k – completion a road/trail race with minimum of 5k

5k – no qualification is required, but the runner has to consider the terrain and weather of Mt. Merbabu

Online submission of previous certificates is mandatory during registration, and the organizer reserves the right to refuse unqualified result.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

All runners are medically responsible for their own health to participate in this event.

Runner accepts that the route is designed to be challenging and adapted to similar race.

Runner understands that medical response to emergencies may be slow due to the natural conditions that occur.

Runner agrees that the organizer and sponsor will in no way be responsible for any loss or damage to personal belongings.

Runner understands and accepts that the organizer has the right to make changes to the published race course if deemed necessary.

Runner understands and accepts that the race organizer has the right to change the date or cancel the event if any emergency occurs beyond the control of the organizer.

REFUND POLICY

  • The cancellation is prohibited once your registration status is approved and paid. Runner will be disqualified if running using other runner’s BIB.
  • Downgrade or upgrade the race category is prohibited once the registration status is approved and paid.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE & CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS

If during the race, you encounter another runner or staff member who is injured or sick and unable to move on their own, please give priority to assisting that person by telling race staff for assistance.

The race is located on national park Mt. Merbabu other public/private property places. Please be mindful and share the trail with others at all times. There will be “no passing sections” signs along the race course where you will be prohibited from passing other runners.

Do not damage any property located along the race course.

AID STATIONS & OUTSIDE SUPPORT

Food and drinks will be provided as well Aid Stations. Details will be confirmed nearer to race day.

The food and drinks at the aid stations are only for the racers.

Non-registered racers may not run alongside racers (No pacers allowed).

Outside support by family and friends is not allowed.

You are allowed to buy food/drinks from the food stall/warung a long the race route.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE DURING THE RACE

In order to ensure race safety, race organizer will prepare and arrange for rescue and medical assistance during the race. However, each participant must recognize and understand that there are risks that may result in injuries and/or accidents associated with trail running. You are responsible for yourself and will be participating in this race at your own risk.

Emergency and first aid tents staffed by a doctor and/or nurse will be located at pointed aid stations. All aid stations will have radio communication to race headquarters.

Emergency rescues/procedures will be available to racers as well all those involved in the race (e.g. staff, supporters).

Please note that, depending on the area, it may take a long period of time for help to reach you.

If you receive emergency medical assistance from a rescue crew and/or doctor, please make sure that you get examined by a medical expert at a hospital after the race. Please contact the race organizer centre to let them know of your condition after the medical examination.

Doctors and rescue staff have the authority to stop a runner from continuing the race.

If you drop out of the race, you can continue walk by take a shorter path back to finish line on your own.

Depending on your condition, an emergency evacuation may be required. This evacuation will be at the expense of the person being rescued. For all racers must be obtain adequate travel insurance coverage for the duration of your stay.

RACE COURSE MARKERS

The race course will be marked using marking tapes (red and white colors) and signs. Race staff will also be positioned along the course. Dangerous areas will be marked by marking tapes (yellow and black colors) and patrolled by staff in order to reduce risk.

(Note: Permission has been obtained from the appropriate land owners and property managers to put up temporary signs and marking tapes)

The marking tapes will always be placed on the proper place such as tree or another similar places, a bamboo sticks along the sand dunes sand, at branches, grasses or bushes that on your eye level sight (about 50 centimeters above the ground). And it will always be on your left side along the race route. But it will be possible that the marking will be placed on your right side if there’s no possibility to put it on the left side.

There will be extra sign that will show which way for each category (so please read the signs and the course map carefully). Further details will be given.

For the route that will be passed at night time we will add extra reflector at the marking tapes.

Racers will be stopped at road intersections. Please follow the directions given by the race staff at these intersections.

The above signs and markers will be set up just before the race and will be immediately removed after the race.

There will be a “no-passing” section as well as other sections with specific rules/conditions.

DROPPING OUT OF THE RACE

If you decide to drop out of the race, you must notify race staff. Please remove your race card/bib and report to a race staff member so that race Organizer Center can be notified. Once you’ve dropped out of the race, you will not be able to re-start. Remember to keep your race card with you as you will need it to retrieve your bags from the bag storage area.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Please read this section very carefully. Any runner not adhering to any of the following rules is subject to disqualification or penalty.

GEAR & EQUIPMENT

Mandatory

  1. BIB number has to be always visible during the race and placed in front of runner’s body part (you are not allowed to fold, modified or placed your BIB number on your running shorts). If you’re using windproof jackets make sure that the BIB number still visible.
  2. Suitable apparels and equipment for extreme cold weather and rain (long sleeves, leggings, jacket, mitten, gloves, buff, light raincoat), assess your own needs for this.
  3. Mobile phone (advised to get a prepaid local number with data plan, available at shops around race central. If using number that is different from your registration, please inform organizer).
  4. Hydration Bag, Hydro bag or Hydration Vest, minimum capacity 1.5 Liter, must be filled-up before START, and to be refilled at water station. Do not hand-carry your water bottle (except when you drink). You need your hands for more important situation during the race. Water bottles must be placed on your bag when not drinking.

Personal food (for example: energy gels, bars, chomps, powders, dates, bread, etc).

20k - 10k

  • Headlamps with functional battery + spare battery. Spare lights, in forms of headlamps or torchlight.
  • Survival/Emergency Blanket of 1.40m x 2m minimum.
  • Whistle/
  • Self adhesive elasticized bandage which can serve as a bandage or strapping (minimum 100 cm x 6 cm)/
  • Basic Aid-Kit, and personal medicines (e.g. for allergies).
  • Printed map for Ultra categories.

5k

  • Whistle
  • Basic Aid-Kit, and personal medicines (e.g. for allergies)
  • Highly Recommended
  • Suitable apparels and equipment for extreme cold weather and rain (long sleeves, leggings, jacket, mitten, gloves, buff, light raincoat).
  • Gaiter will be very useful due to sandy and muddy conditions in some parts.
  • Life, accident or travel insurance.

DROP BAGS

Drop Bags available for categories 20k. Drop bag collection must be 1 hour prior the flag off at the latest. Deposit bag available at Race Central for all categories.

RACER RESPONSIBILITIES

You understand the unique nature and requirements of competing in an ultra-long distance trail running race. You will be running all day and night through mountainous and hilly terrain and have undertaken the necessary training to compete in such a race.

You will be responsible for yourself and have the ability to deal with any problems that may be encountered during the race.

You are able to deal with, on your own without assistance, deteriorating weather conditions (low temperatures, strong winds and rain) and other troubles expected when traveling across mountainous terrain.

You are able to deal with extreme fatigue, internal organ and digestive problems, muscle pain, mild physical injuries and psychological problems on your own.

You are fully aware that when participating in an outdoor activity such as this race, your safety depends on your own skills and abilities.

RACE CANCELLATION

The race organization has the right to change the date, shortcut the course, or cancel the race for the following reasons:


Weather warnings sent by the meteorological agency.

The inability to ensure runner safety due to risks such as landslides and rock falls along the course.

Natural disasters (or declared warnings issued by the “BMKG-Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi Geofisika) In such a case, the race course cannot be changed to continue the race, nor will the race be postponed to a later date.

The decision as to whether or not the race will be cancelled will be made on the day before the race or on the day of the race. This will be communicated via the official race website.

In the event of an earthquake, hurricane/typhoon, flood, incidents, accidents and/or epidemics, the race organization reserves the right to make judgments and decisions regarding the shortening/cancelling of the race, whether or not there will be refunds, the amount, and the method of communication.

  1. Participants need to submit medical certificate to complete registration. Please download the template from our website https://merbabu-skyrace.com/medical-certificate/ and email us the completed form.
  2. Race is open to male or female 18 years of age or older as of the race day, who is in good health and can complete the race without getting lost.

Sri Agus Budi Santoso, born and grow up in Boyolali city with sports and health education background and more than 15 years experience in trail running community, has been successfully designed and organized several big events, both of running and cycling race such as Merbabu SkyRace, Merumatta Coast Trail, Vertical Telomoyo, Rails to Trails 16k, MesaStila100, Pandawa Duathlon, MesaStila Duathlon.

Merbabu Skyrace is presented to the hometown of Boyolali as his passion in the trail running and want to create an international Trail Running event in Boyolali's tourist destinations mount Merapi and Merbabu.
